For the gate to function properly, a maximum length of 60 inches is recommended. However, a gate kit can be used for an opening width of 48 inches.

Is it absolutely necessary for the gate frame to be 23 inches wider than the opening?

Yes. With less than 23 inches, there isn't enough space for the guiding mechanism to work properly.
